Zoe Burr : Researcher

Zoe Burr

Researcher

Based at UNIS, I am working both as a part-time researcher studying marine phenology and ornithology, and in the AB-204 (Arctic Ecology and Population Biology) classroom to help facilitate student active learning as part of the project "Numerical Competence and Student Active Learning". This is done primarily through helping to link learning opportunities for students to real-time research efforts in Svalbard (for example seabird research on Spitsbergen), and by helping students to improve their skills in R through completing practical exercises that use local data sets related to the course content.

Student Representative at UNIS

I belong to the university of Oslo (UiO), where I am working on my biology bachelor. There I am involved in student politics and welfare, and the communication between students and faculty. From the beginning of my bachelor, it has been a dream of mine to come to UNIS and study arctic biology. Now that I'm here I can hardly contain my excitement. I have long been interested in biology, especially marine and arctic biology, so it comes as no surprise that I packed my bags as soon as I was accepted at UNIS.

I want to be a good asset for bioCEED and help spread the joy of studying biology that I experience everyday up here. I believe that bioCEED is doing an important job by spreading knowledge.

I am leading the work package on "Strengthening links between education and society" (WP 7). Being a senior researcher at the Institute of Marine Research, I work mostly in projects with clear societal responsibility, giving scientifically based advice in marine management topics, both on species level and open sea marine ecosystems. My role in bioCEED, along with the PRIME-project, in opening up the “real” world to biology students is a pleasure.

I'm currently in Longyearbyen as a guest master student, studying zooplankton on the west and east coast of Svalbard. I was involved with bioCEED at UNIS as a bachelor student representative during 2015/2016, and have experience from bioCEED-projects in Bergen (e.g. Te2Le and biOrakel). Now I've joined again to share my experience and facilitate this year's student representatives.

As a Postdoctoral Researcher at bioCEED, I am involved in several projects including PRIME, iSCOPE, bioSKILLS and Teach 2 Learn where I aim to identify, develop and evaluate innovative pedagogical activities in higher education. I focus my research on the perception of transferable skills acquired through different student-active learning activities, including internships and practical experience. Study groups include both students and educators/supervisors, both at university and in the workplace. One part of this research includes the evaluation student awareness of the role they can play in the society when entering the workforce as a biologist. Further, I implement and evaluate the use of digital technologies as learning and teaching tools in different BSc- and MSc-level courses.

I am 25 years old and norwegian, and a biology student at bachelor level. Currently I am living in Longyearbyen. My main interests (in the field of biology) are environmental biology and toxicology. I wanted to join bioCEED because I want to participate in what is going on, rather than observe and accept. I believe there is a gap between empirical science and what reaches the public, and that this experience will give me inspiration about how to communicate science. Also, I would love to influence in finding interesting and relevant topics and speakers for discussions (which I believe to be great arenas for creating ideas and inspiration).

I’m 22 years old, and I come from Sandnes, Norway. I study to become a teacher in biology and chemistry at NTNU (integrated teacher program with master in science), but this semester I am studying arctic biology at UNIS. During my education I have learned a lot about teaching and learning, and I hope to use some of these experiences in my work as a student representative for bioCEED. From my home university I have also experienced large student groups and a small degree of student involvement, and this is something I want to try to make different.

I am a student at the Integrated Teacher Programme with Master in Science (Biology). This semester I am studying arctic biology at UNIS as an addition to my education at NTNU in Trondheim. I am passionate about that the biological education shall be experienced as relevant and meaningful. That the students, during and after lectures and practical training can use what they have learned to see the world, and the society, in a greater perspective, and at the same time use the learning outcome to work for a better world. This is what motivates me the most to be a student representative in bioCEED.
